Stress Calculator
Stress Calculator is used to calculate the value of stress levels using applied force and cross-sectional area of the surface. It gives the answer in the units of pressure which is named Pascal (Pa).
What is the Stress?
It is the ratio of applied force on a material and the cross-sectional area of the surface of an object. Stress can be caused by external forces, such as compression, tension, bending, or shearing, which can change or deform the shape of the material. Its formula is stated as.
Stress = F/A
Where
- F = Applied force which is applied on an object and the Unit of “F” is Newton (N).
- A = Cross-Sectional area of an object and the Unit of “A” is “m2”.
Types of Stress
There are three types of stress depending on the situation of applied force on the material.
- Tensile stress
- Compressive stress
- Shear stress
Tensile Stress
Tensile stress comes due to the applied force that pulls the material and causes it to stretch or elongate the material. It is represented as “σt” and its formula is stated as.
σt = F/A
Where,
- F = Applied force on the material
- A = material's cross-sectional area that is perpendicular to a force.
Compressive stress
Compressive stress comes due to the applied force that pushes the material and causes it to compress or shorten the material. It is represented as “σc” and its formula is stated as.
σc = F/A
Where,
- F = Applies force on the material
- A = material's cross-sectional area that is perpendicular to a force.
Shear Stress
Shear Stress comes due to the applied force that causes it to slide one part of a material or shift relative to another part. It is represented as “τ” and its formula is stated as.
τ = F/A
Where,
- F = Applies force on the object
- A = Cross-sectional area of material that is in the parallel direction of a force.
Examples of Stress
Example 1
Find the value of Stress if the applied force on the material is 30N and its area is 5m2 which is perpendicular to the applied force.
Solution:
Step 1: write the given data.
Force = F = 30 N
Area = A = 5m2
Step 2: Write the formula of Stress.
Stress = F/A
Step 3: Put the given values in the above formula and simplify.
Stress = 30/5
Stress = 6
Example 2
If the pulling stress on the material is 20 Pa and the cross-sectional area of the material is 5m2 then find the applied force.
Solution:
Step 1: write the given data.
Tensile stress = σt = 20 Pa
Area = A = 5m2
Step 2: Write the formula of tensile-Stress and rearrange it.
σt = F/A
F= A σt
Step 3: Put the given values in the above formula and simplify.
F= (20)(5)
F = 100 N
